Finally, Google has officially brought us their latest flagship smartphone, Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, and do they have an advantage over Apple’s upcoming IPhone X? In foreign media, Google’s flagship product also has its own secret weapon.
This secret weapon is not something else, it is the first mobile chip developed by Google itself, known as Pixel Visual Core, which is a customized SOC for consumer products, and is currently dedicated to speeding up the hdr+ calculation of the camera, making the image processing smoother and faster.
Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL both have built-in Pixel Visual Core, but the current processor is dormant and Google may activate the processor after the software is ready.
Pixel Visual Core is an image Processing unit (IPU), similar to a conventional 8-core SOC. Technically, it has a 9th * *, an ARM cortex-a53 unit in the upper-left corner. Each of the 8 Google Designs is tailored to handle hdr+, which uses less than 1/10 of the power, allowing HDR + performance to be 5 times times faster than the current implementation.
And Google says that after updating the Android Camera API, they will allow third-party camera developers to use HDR + and Pixel Visual Core, which will be the developer option in the Android Oreo 8.1 preview. Obviously, all of these technologies are strictly limited to Pixel 2. Google ruled out the current Pixel owners and other Android users. Because Google recognizes that Pixel Visual Core will become a unique selling point of the Pixel 2 camera system, it is working to develop and expand its leading position.
It could be said that Google has been on the way to deal with the image of the weapons, then Apple’s flagship IPhone can better deal with it? We all know that IPhone X will be configured with a bionic A11 processor, and TSMC employs the latest mature technology, which includes 4 Mistral (Energy efficiency * *) + 2 Monsoon (Performance * *). Compared with A10, four energy efficiency * * speeds up to 70%, and two performance * * speeds up to a maximum of 25%.
At the same time, both the GPU and the ISP are Apple-developed, and the three-core GPU is up to 30% faster than the previous generation, since the ISP can achieve quicker autofocus in a low brightness environment and improve pixel processing effectively.
And the upgrade of the camera will put forward higher requirements for the image integration processing ability and precision algorithm of the program quotient and the module enterprise. The adoption of dual-camera and standalone ISP (image signal processor) will be the technical basis for camera upgrades, and dedicated image memory will be the standard for future smartphones and consumer electronic camera modules.
Of course, Google’s Pixel 2 and Apple’s IPhone X are certainly integrated with many advanced technologies that are highly likely to become their own unique weapons.
